CHAPTER TEN

Brandon contemplated Anna as she sat near the bay window in the living room of the Coalson house, an afghan that his mother had crocheted stuffed around her slim legs. She had been released from the hospital today after being treated for two broken ribs, a contusion on her shoulder and a concussion.

She watched the twins chase the dogs as they romped on the front lawn. Today was the first day it hadn’t rained in over a week and the children’s pent-up energy had finally found an outlet. Their shrieks of laughter could be heard even though the windows were closed against the brisk winds of late April. Sensing his presence, Anna remarked, “It’s been so long since they have had anything to laugh about,” she turned to him with worship shining from her dark eyes. “Thank you.”

Brandon smiled sheepishly. He couldn’t help but notice the changes in her appearance as well. She was still reed thin in her pale yellow dress, but her eyes had lost their haunted look. Now they shined a soft warm brown. Her hair was no longer confined to that severe bun that made her look mousy. Instead it floated across her shoulders, a shimmering wave of sable. Her new glasses, perched on her perky little nose, gave her the look of a naughty librarian. God, he loved it when she looked at him like that.

A thrill of masculine pride surged through him as he looked at her. He felt like a conquering hero when she looked at him that way. He had slain the dragon and saved the damsel in distress. Now they would live happily ever after.

Unfortunately, in today’s world, the hero wasn’t quite sure of the damsel’s true feelings, and the evil dragon still lived and was threatening court action to take the children away. Brandon stifled a sigh as he approached her. Fairytales were quite a bit more complicated these days.

“Anna, I’ve asked a friend of mine to come by in a few minutes. He’s a lawyer. He needs to ask you some questions about your sister.”

Anna was instantly alarmed. “Why?” She darted a glance back outside to check on the children.

Brandon squatted next to her chair and took her hand. He felt the tiny shivers coursing through her tension filled body. When she glanced down at him, the haunted look was back in her eyes. “Do you trust me?” he asked.

At her nod, he continued. “Josh Townsend is a good friend and a great lawyer. He’s got a reputation for playing hardball, and he has won almost every one of his cases. But in order for him to do his job to the best of his ability, he needs to know everything you can remember about your sister after she married Keith, up until she died.”

“I don’t understand. I thought everything was taken care of by Mrs. Davis. I have a copy of Judge Larkin’s ruling.”
